Description
The portrait came to Doddington through the marriage of Charles Francis ‘Bobby’ Cracroft Jarvis (1875–1957) to Helen Constance Hunter Blair, daughter of Sir Edward Hunter Blair of Blairquhan and Dunskey, fourth Baronet (1818–1896) and Elizabeth Wauchope (d. 1899). Although the sitter has been identified as Anthony Wauchope, no person of this name is mentioned in the Wauchope family biography.1 Rather, he may in fact be George Wauchope (1785–1848), father of Elizabeth Wauchope. The portrait, which is small in scale, may be a study for a larger work.
