Description
The portrait is highly reminiscent of the head studies of men wearing ruffs by Sir Anthony van Dyck, including one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford,1 which relates to his destroyed painting Justice Flanked by Seven Magistrates of the City of Brussels, c.1634. Although the composition is reminiscent of Van Dyck, the handling is quite different, suggesting that it is either copied directly from or more generally influenced by Van Dyck.
