Description
The identity of the sitter is uncertain. She has been called Mary Eden, the daughter of Robert Eden (DN29). However, the present portrait is too early in date to be a portrait of Mary Eden (see DN59). Rather, it is possible that the sitter is Martha Lowth, daughter of William Lowth (DN49) and wife of Robert Eden. Oliver Millar, who inspected the portrait at Doddington in 1952, noted: ‘Pond. Portrait of a woman, signed and dated 173…: bust to front in painted oval, in white with a blue cloak: light, thin and scratchy, but quite good and not at all like the two large groups of the Delavals, c.1740, which are attributed to him.’1
