Description
The present marine painting is attributed to Henry Redmore on stylistic grounds. In terms of its style and subject matter it is comparable to a number of Redmore’s works, such as Ships off the Coast in Hull Maritime Museum (KINCM:2007.1040), which features a similar fishing boat in the foreground. Redmore also painted a number of other marine pictures featuring shipping off the Yorkshire coast, at Whitby and Scarborough. He also painted marine subjects which combined fishing boats and merchant ships in rough weather near cliffs, such as A Coastal Scene with a Cliff, a Fishing Boat and a Merchantman in a Storm (Nottingham County Hall CH0021). An attribution to Redmore’s contemporary, George Knight (fl. 1872–1892), is also possible although, on balance, Redmore seems a more likely candidate.
